How to Stay Safe this 4th of July

4th of July safety tipsFor over two hundred years, Americans have been celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence and our nation’s freedom on the 4th of July. Interesting fact: Presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, two signers of the Declaration of Independence, both passed away on July 4, 1826.

Around the country, millions of us will celebrate this year at a backyard barbecue, a picnic in the park, splashing at the pool or beach, and taking in a dazzling display of fireworks in the evening. No matter what you do, it’s also important to incorporate safety into your celebrations; according to the National Safety Council, the Fourth of July is the most dangerous American holiday weekend of the year. On average, there are more car accidents on July 4th than New Year’s Eve, and at-home fireworks can easily cause injuries when not used properly.

4th of July Safety Tips and Fireworks Safety Tips

No matter how or where you celebrate this year, keep these 4th of July safety tips and fireworks safety tips top of mind throughout the upcoming holiday weekend to ensure a fun, safe time is had by all:

  • Practice safe grilling. What’s a backyard party without the burgers, hot dogs or brats? However, before you fire up the grill, make sure it is set back from the house and away from awnings or branches. If the weather isn’t cooperating, you should never use a grill indoors, even in the garage. Keep kids and pets away from the grill area, too.
  • Promote fireworks safety. While it’s recommended to leave the fireworks to the professionals, the state of Michigan does allow consumer fireworks like firecrackers and aerial devices like bottle rockets and Roman candles. The most important fireworks safety tip is to follow the directions on the package, and never use them for anything they aren’t intended for or alter them in any way. Light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from flammable materials like dried leaves or grass and clothing. After the fireworks have gone off, toss the remnants in a bucket of water or spray them down with a hose.
  • Swim safely. On a hot summer day, it’s refreshing to cool off at the pool or beach! Make sure to keep watch on the kids and don’t rely on flotation devices like rafts or water wings to keep them safe. Be aware of the water depth, especially at the beach.
  • Make your health a priority. If you’ll be spending the majority of the day outdoors on the 4th of July, make sure to stay hydrated and seek out shady areas when you’re feeling overheated to avoid dehydration and heatstroke. Wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s rays and reapply it throughout the day.
  • Drink responsibly. Enjoying a frosty adult beverage or two on the 4th of July is fine, but be careful about overindulging- know your limits! Plus, too much alcohol can lead to dehydration, too. Always designate a driver ahead of time to ensure you can get home safely from the festivities.

From all of us here at Self Storage Specialists, we wish you a fun, happy and safe 4th of July!
