St. Patrick’s Day in Ann Arbor

st. patrick's day in ann arbor 2017Whether you are of Irish heritage or are just Irish at heart, it’s time to dig your green attire out of the closet and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this weekend! If you live in Ann Arbor, you’ll find no shortage of events and activities that will have you cheering Erin go Bragh!

The Irish first arrived in the Detroit area in the early 1800s; in fact, the first St. Patrick’s Day in the area took place in 1808. By the 1850s, the Irish would be the region’s largest ethnic group, representing about a third of the foreign-born population. While Detroit has one of the longest-standing St. Patrick’s Day parades in the country, there are plenty of ways to celebrate just a little over 40 miles to the west in Ann Arbor, too.

Get Your Irish On with these St. Patrick’s Day Events in Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor may not host a parade like downtown Detroit, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any festivities to attend! So, swap out your University of Michigan blue shirt for a green one and head to any of these Ann Arbor attractions for some St. Patrick’s Day fun:

Conor O’Neill’s Irish Pub and Restaurant: Located in downtown Ann Arbor on Main Street, Conor O’Neill’s was actually built with imported wood and stone straight from Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day is the day this pub waits for all year long, so they waste no time starting the celebrations! Doors open at 7 a.m. for breakfast, hourly drink specials, bag pipers, Irish dancers and plenty of great food and beer.

Bill’s Beer Garden: Enjoy Michigan craft beers and family fun at Bill’s Beer Garden, which has its grand reopening this St. Patrick’s Day! Grab some food from adjacent Mark’s Carts, featuring a great mix of locally sourced food, and hang out in the corridor bisecting Downtown Home & Garden.

Arbor Brewing Company: Join the group at the Arbor Brewing Company for a St. Patrick’s Day street party. Festivities include live music from the Joel Rydecki Band, plenty of adult beverages and tasty food.

Other nearby places to head for St. Patrick’s Day include:

Cleary’s Pub: Located in historic downtown Chelsea, Cleary’s is a traditional neighborhood pub featuring an original tin ceiling from the turn of the century and exposed brick walls. Join them St. Patrick’s day for a cozy atmosphere, delicious Irish food and top-notch, friendly service.

The Rumpus Room: Strap on your dancing shoes and head to the Rumpus Room this St. Patrick’s Day, also located in Chelsea, for a night of shenanigans and live music from Erin Zindle of the Ragbirds.
