Attractions and Events in Michigan in the Winter

Regardless of whether you’re looking for something to do in the greater Detroit area or are willing to travel a little distance, you’ll find plenty of winter activities to keep you and the entire family busy for the next couple months. Here are just a few things to do throughout Michigan this winter:

  • Skiing at the many Michigan Ski Slopes. Did you know that Michigan offers some of the best downhill skiing in the entire Midwest? Whether you’d rather stick to the bunny hill or fly down a double black diamond, check out this list of some of the best places to ski in Michigan in the winter, from Alpine Valley in the southern part of the state to Crystal Mountain in the northwest and everywhere in between!
  • Tobogganing at Detroit area parks. Take advantage of the kids’ snow day by heading to some of the Metroparks in the Detroit area for an afternoon of tobogganing or sledding. Kensington Metropark, for example, has a variety of hills for sled-riders of all ages, as well as toboggan runs near the Orchard picnic area.
  • Ice skating at Campus Martius Park or Metroparks. From now until March 6th, head to The Rink at Campus Martius Park in Detroit for some seasonal ice skating fun! Or, if the lakes in the area are freezing over, some of the metroparks in the Huron-Clinton area like Lake St. Clair in Harrison Township or Lower Huron in Belleville also offer ice skating in a natural setting.
  • Head to a Detroit Red Wings game. The Detroit Red Wings have a full schedule this winter, all the way through April 9th. If you haven’t been to a game yet, you’re missing out on the action and excitement!
  • Visit a nature center for fun outdoor activities. Almost all the metroparks in the Detroit area have nature centers that offer crafts, activities and fun events for the whole family. For example, at the Leslie Science & Nature Center in Ann Arbor, you can check out their “Critters Up Close” event to meet some live animals or head out to feed the raptors!
  • Check out a wintertime festival. Across Michigan this winter, you’ll find a plethora of winter fairs, festivals and other fun events to check out while it’s still chilly outside. For instance, Ice Breaker 2016 in South Haven takes place this weekend and features ice sculptures, horse-drawn wagon rides, a chili cook-off, and more!

How will you be enjoying Michigan in the winter this year? Stay warm, and remember, spring is less than two months away now!
