Michigan in the Fall

Michigan in the FallEarly to mid-October offers some of the most vibrant changing colors in the majority of the state of Michigan. Blazing crimsons, fiery oranges, and sunny yellows are beginning to burst along landscapes everywhere, sometimes looking more like a painting than reality. If you’re wondering where to see some of the best fall colors, Michigan has over 19 million acres of woods and plenty of activities to make sure you get the most out of this glorious season.

What to do in Michigan this Fall

As early as late September the leaves began changing in parts of our state. This month, the colors really start to explode so there’s no time like the present to get out there and take them all in.

Here are just a fun things to do in Michigan in the fall:

  • Take a fall color tour. Throughout the state, there are several fall color tours based on when the colors are the most spectacular. In Detroit, for example, tours throughout the area’s metroparks, like Lake St. Clair Metropark and Algonac State Park offer nature trails and views of beautiful Lake St. Clair. Detroit is actually the starting point for a 195 miles fall color route through historic Southeast Michigan, and there’s no better time for a road trip than October!
  • Head to a fall festival. Looking for something the kids will enjoy, too? Head to one of the many fall festivals, corn mazes, or hayrides throughout Southeast Michigan! Like the Wilson Barn Pumpkin Fest, which runs through the end of October, or go on a hayride where you can pick your own pumpkins at Kensington Metropark Farm Center.
  • Taste some award-winning wines and brews. Throughout the state of Michigan, there are a total of nine wine, beer and spirit trails where you can taste some delicious beverages while enjoy the sights of fall. For instance, the Southeast Michigan Pioneer Wine Trail hits wineries like Burgdorf’s Winery in Haslett, Sandhill Crane Vineyards, J. Trees Cellars Cidery & Winery, and Cherry Creek Old Schoolhouse Winery and Fudgery, just to name a few of the 10 wineries along this trail!
  • Visit a cider mill. Michigan is renowned for its many cider mills throughout the state! With fall being harvest time, there’s no better season to visit a cider mill like the Franklin Cider Mill in Bloomfield Hills or the Paint Creek Cider Mill in Oakland Township.
  • Saddle up and head into the sunset. What better way is there to take in the serenity of nature from atop of a mighty horse? Just outside of Detroit, you’ll find several riding stables with horses available to rent no matter what your level of experience is.
