Holiday Nights in Greenfield Village

The holiday season is fully upon us, and there are plenty of holiday events in Detroit scheduled to help you celebrate this wonderful time of year! No matter where your interests lie, there’s something for everyone to help boost that holiday spirit.

Gather your family and take in some of the spectacular light displays throughout the area, like Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo. Running through the end of December, the event features more than five million LED lights illuminating trees, buildings and animal sculptures as well as live entertainment, ice carving and arts and crafts.

You can also “take a lantern-lit journey into a snow globe filled with live music, skating, fireworks and tons of winter wonder” at Holiday Nights in Greenfield Village. It’s one of the most popular holiday events in Detroit, bringing back a feeling of Christmases of the past.  The celebration goes through all the weekends in December, and you don’t want to miss this experience!

Other holiday lighting events in the area include the Christmas Display at the Ford-MacNichol home, another step back in time to enjoy the customs and traditions of holidays gone by, and the Wayne County Lightfest, the Midwest’s largest and longest light show. The Christmas Open House at the Ford-MacNichol home runs this weekend and is free to attend- the holiday decorations are up for the entire month of December and can be viewed during normal tour hours. The Wayne County Lightfest runs through the end of December and features more than 47 giant animated holiday themed displays.

If you’re looking for some traditional theater productions to enjoy, Detroit is not lacking in that department, either! A favorite holiday tradition for many is to see a production of The Nutcracker, and if you missed The Balletmet Columbus’s performance in November, you can catch the Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker this weekend, on December 21st.

Along with The Nutcracker, another popular holiday show is A Christmas Carol.  The story of Ebenezer Scrooge was written back in 1843 by Charles Dickens and has been a popular stage production for many, many years.  The show closes this weekend, so there’s still time to get to the Detroit Theater and enjoy it this year.

If you’re looking for a unique holiday-themed show, Cirque Dreams: Holidaze should be right up your alley. It’s a circus-type of event that features ornaments and gingerbread men coming to life and performing a variety of amazing feats. Your whole family will be dazzled by this spectacular show!

Other holiday events in Detroit not to miss include going ice skating at the rink at Campus Martius Park, stopping by Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland, the biggest year-round Christmas store, and taking a drive along Lake Shore Drive in Grosse Pointe to view the amazing light displays in the neighborhood.

If you live in the Detroit Metro area, we hope you’re able to get to at least one of these events to help celebrate the season!
